It really wasn't long ago at all that Sorato Anraku started sport climbing as an elementary school second grader at home in Yachiyo, Japan. In the few short years since that first lesson however Sorato has literally climbed to the top of the sport, becoming the first-ever athlete to win the IFSC World Cup titles in bouldering and lead in their debut elite season and claiming an Olympic silver medal – all before turning 18 years old. He's a true climbing wonder kid.
Since leaving Japan to compete internationally for the first time in 2018, Sorato has been on the fast track to the top, displaying incredible ability in both bouldering and lead climbing. In 2021 he won the the lead gold and claimed silver in the boulder division at the IFSC Youth World Championship, repeating his lead victory the following year.
It was his step up to the full IFSC World Cup tour in 2023 at the age of just 16 that really showed just how good Sorato already was. Just how good? Check out his rookie achievements: three World Cup wins in lead, another in bouldering and two more podiums that handed him the overall IFSC World Cup titles in both bouldering and lead – the first time a rookie climber's achieved this feat. His age made it even more incredible. A silver medal in lead at the 2023 IFSC World Championships completed a historic season for the teenager.
2024 was another momentous year for Sorato, who still only 17, stood on the Olympic podium in Paris after securing the silver medal in the combined event. And that was just the start. He also added more wins and podiums in the Boulder World Cup on his way to securing a second straight crown. Sorato also added bouldering gold at the Asian Championships for good measure.
Now, to cap his 2025 season, Sorato delivered a sensational finals performance to win the IFSC Bouldering World Championship title in Seoul, South Korea, securing his first bouldering crown at the at the age of just 18.
Still a school student alongside his global sport climbing commitments, imagine what Sorato will be able to do when climbing gets his full attention.
