06
How does the Red Bull Dual Ascent scoring system work?
The scoring system for Red Bull Dual Ascent is designed to reward both speed and precision. Teams are ranked based on the following criteria:
- Time: While total climbing time is important, this is not the only priority. The primary criterion is completing the climb as a continuous ascent (without falls) as quickly as possible.
- Falls: Although unlimited falls are allowed, each fall incurs a penalty point. However, if the climber lowers back to the start of that pitch and climbs it cleanly on the retry, those penalty points are erased.
- Mistakes: Technical errors or rule violations such as grabbing a quickdraw, standing on a bolt, sitting in the rope, etc. can also result in penalty points, affecting the team's final score.
- Winner: The team with the best combined performance – considering redpoint ascent (climbing without falls), penalty points, and time – is declared the winner.
07
What is multi-pitch climbing?
In multi-pitch climbing, teams of two or more climbers work together to ascend a route divided into sections called pitches. One climber ‘lead climbs’, taking the risk of climbing above the bolts that would catch them if they fall, while the other belays. They then switch roles for the next pitch. A typical pitch is around 30-40 meters high.
08
What’s the difficulty level of Red Bull Dual Ascent?
In one word: tough! The climb has been expertly created by a team of pro route setters that results in being the globe’s most challenging competition route. Pitches start at a minimum of 6c and go up towards a difficulty level of 8b according to the French system. The route is set to play to different climbers’ strengths and weaknesses equally, and encourages innovation and for competitors to push the boundaries of what’s possible.
