The 10 types of Fortnite player

Face the storm in Fortnite and survive – but know exactly how to recognise who you’re surviving with.

Fortnite is, unsurprisingly, a game about building forts at night. There's more to it, of course, not least cribbing heavily from Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds, but that's the crux. In Fortnite, a terrible storm has transformed half the population of the Earth into mindless zombie mutants and it's your job to repel them and thus defend humanity. And if all the building and zombie-slaying gets exhausting, you can always jump into the new PvP Battle Royale mode and duke it out with 99 other people.
However, as with most online games, whatever your mode of choice, archetypes abound. We've listed the 10 most common types of player you'll find defending the world (or very definitely, tragically not) in Fortnite.

The Architect

Player trait: Obsessive-compulsive builder
Usually found: Miles above the map
If you build it, they will come. If you don't build it, they will come and build it. All of it. The Architect takes their construction very seriously. They think nothing of exceeding the build limit to add a balcony to a fortress, maybe a little indoor parking. Sometimes – and we've no idea why – they will just build an endless ramp into the heavens.
Maybe they're searching for their god; maybe they've just lost the plot. Honestly, we don't know, but we'd rather they put down the hammer and got involved with the zombie issue.

The Sightseer

Player trait: Loves a stroll
Usually found: Taking in the scenery
The Sightseer doesn't get out much, as evidenced by the sense of awe and wonder with which they view the outside world. At least, that's what we assume is going on when they spend so much of a match absent. Well, not absent, just kind of busy with other things.
Whether they're out mutant-spotting, looking at real estate or tending the unkempt shrubbery of the recently deceased, all we know for sure is that they're not around when we need them.

The Lunatic

Player trait: Extreme, unhinged fear of missing out
Usually found: Fighting everything
This player is nuts. Recklessness is all a part of their charm, or so they believe. This is the player who'll build like mad to reach any collectible by the most direct route, who'll charge into any horde with just a broadsword and a manic smile.
In the Battle Royale mode they're just as unhinged, risking everything over and over for swift and brutal gratification. The Lunatic has no plan beyond getting the job done as fast as possible.

The Liability

Player trait: Will get you killed
Usually found: Getting you killed
Don't stand too close to this one, they'll probably wall you in. This is the player who accidentally drops a set of steps outside a barricade that allows the horde to simply tumble, Lemmings-style, into your stronghold. They trigger the Atlas too early, get lost on the far side of the map when it kicks off – and if you see them running blindly towards you, brace yourself, because they've probably just upset an entire town full of mutated killing machines. Cheers, mate.

The FPS Fan

Player trait: Thinks everything is CoD
Usually found: Playing CoD
This player doesn't care what Fortnite is all about. He or she doesn't care two hoots if you take it seriously. They don't hold with stats, classes, building or defending. The FPS Fan just wants to shoot things. Predominantly Soldier class, they seek out ammo and things to fire it into, and nothing betwixt.
You might wonder why they're not constructing defences or harvesting materials, and it's because all that productive stuff is for cowards. They're just chillaxing, waiting on more stuff to perforate.

The Competitor

Player trait: Only plays PvP
Usually found: Atop 99 corpses, laughing
Before Fortnite introduced its Battle Royale mode, it was a tower-defence/action-shooter hybrid with a strong PvE element. The Competitor doesn't even remember that version of Fortnite; they're here for the glory alone.
To the dogs with teamwork and base building! What profit in defending the Earth? Who gives a monkey's about completing objectives? Not this player. This player just wants to hunt you down and take you out.

The Destroyer

Player trait: Hates the environment
Usually found: Breaking things
Look, just because you can reduce everything you see to nuts and bolts, pebbles or kindling, doesn't mean you should. However, the Destroyer disagrees. Perhaps everything offends them, perhaps they've got some pent-up rage to work out. Maybe they just really hate scenery.
Either way, the Destroyer can't come to the Apocalypse right now, as they're busy trying to decimate all the works of humankind single-handedly.

The Hunter

Player trait: Stone-cold killer
Usually found: Hiding in the bushes
The Hunter is a consummate professional. Not content with simply defending their lot or beating back the horde, the Hunter wants to head out into the breach with a crossbow, a sniper rifle and a samurai sword and meticulously pick off every last threat.
Particularly lethal in PvP mode, the Hunter is a deadly force to be reckoned with, and will happily mount your head on their wall next to a row of decapitated storm mutants.

The Sadist

Player trait: Likes traps. A little too much.
Usually found: Maiming things
In the event of an invasion by aliens, zombies or mutants, the ability to make and lay traps would be pretty invaluable. Home defence would be paramount and that particular skill set would at least give you and your companions a fighting chance.
But some people take it a little bit far. Some people want to watch their enemies writhe and squirm, impaled on spikes and fried by loose wiring. They take pleasure in watching their attackers burn and squeal. The Sadist is one such player; someone who delights in filling the world with death traps and watching the unsuspecting wander blindly into a faceful of poison gas.

The Completionist

Player trait: Loves ticking boxes
Usually found: Chasing map markers
Okay, so Fortnite isn't all about killing zombies and building forts. There are also a raft of objectives rolled into each area that reward you with XP and loot. Most are throwaway, easily ignorable, and some even respawn spontaneously.
Unfortunately, there are some gamers who simply can't ignore objective markers, to the ruin of all. The Completionist has to tackle everything that pops up. You might have just booted up for a quick game, but the Completionist has other ideas. If you get stuck in a game with this player, an Architect, and a Destroyer, you better hope you brought your dinner, because you're in for a long, long night.
