G2 Esports have shown why they’re one of the best teams at the League of Legends World Championship following a dominant victory over Cloud9.
Marcin ‘Jankos’ Jankowski, the LEC Summer Split MVP, initially looked shaky on Qiyana but the MSI winners managed to claw their way back into the game and finished off C9 in the fastest group stage match of the tournament so far. And his team-mate Mihael ‘Mikyx’ Mehle reveals what was happening onstage during the match and gives his assessment on how the NA and EU teams are performing in the tournament.
What was that Cloud9 game?
It was a fun game I guess. Bot lane played as expected, top side didn’t go so well but we were just laughing throughout the whole game because it kind of felt like solo queue. Even when we kept dying topside, we never felt like we were going to lose the game because their bot and mid were the only damage threats and they were behind. We were just having fun.
We were making fun of Jankos throughout the game, he kept saying ‘Ah I’m dead again’, we’d tell him ‘Yeah, maybe just play around bot lane and we’ll probably win you know?'.
How’s your wrist?
My wrist is doing pretty well – I’ve not had any problems since MSI. On stage yesterday, I was just memeing because both Caps and Perkz had their own thing when they were introduced on stage and I had to improvise and think about something I can [also] do to look funny. So I just pretended that my wrist was hurting – I thought of that on the spot.
What do you make of NA teams’ performances so far?
I think overall, NA aren’t doing too great. Team Liquid is the best one out of them – they’re actually playing OK. C9 and Clutch aren’t that great from what I’ve seen or played against.
TL are the only team I see that can make it out of the groups, the other two, probably not. But even TL have a tough group because Damwon and IG are really strong.
Are you feeling better now you’ve beaten a Korean team?
We feel a lot more confident against Korean teams now. After beating Griffin, the whole team got a little confidence boost because we didn’t know what to expect coming into the match. The game went really well, we’re pretty happy with the way we played so if we keep playing like that we should be fine.
What do you make of your chances of getting out of groups?
After beating Griffin, I’d say I’m pretty confident we’ll make it. We’ll probably drop a game, maybe even two if we get complacent but it probably won’t be that hard to make it out of groups. Getting first seed is also doable. We already beat Griffin so we have, in theory, gotten the toughest opponents out of the way until next week.
Perkz tweeted at Sneaky “Don’t duo with my support again”, are you going to stop playing with Sneaky?
While Worlds is going on I will probably have to stop duoing with Sneaky since we’re enemies right now but maybe next year or if he comes back to EU we can duo again, but just not right now.
How do you rate the other EU teams’ performances at Worlds so far?
I think Splyce aren’t doing too great. I’d give them a 5/10 because they’re kind of average and some players are underperforming on that team. I think Spylce could make it out of groups because their group isn’t that hard. All of the teams in that group are also kind of trolling so it’s bit of a coin flip to see who makes it out.
I’d give Fnatic a 7/10 – they have a tough group but they’re playing pretty well and they’re pretty smart about how to move around the map. I heard some of their players are ill at the moment but I think they should have a good chance of making it out of groups.
