Let soul singer Nathy Peluso cast her spell on you
Watch Argentina's Madrid-based singer blend neo-soul sophistication with electronica, old school hip-hop and torch-singer jazz in a bewitching live performance.
Theatrical, flirtatious, maybe even a little histrionic: Nathy Peluso is proud to claim adjectives that other contemporary pop stars try to avoid. Born in Buenos Aires and now based in Madrid, this young twenty-something trained in dance and physical theatre before going into music. While her music keeps you guessing with its mix of hip-hop and soul with salsa, jazz and bossanova, her lyrics play around with multiple characters. She’s also big on visual imagery, with a dramatic, femme fatale aesthetic that has sustained a big following on Instagram and YouTube.
In the player at the top of the page, you can watch the Spanish-Argentinian perform Hot Butter, a track from her recent La Sandunguera EP. Produced with Peter Party of Barcelona-band Big Menu, the record pits minimal production against her Sixties-inflected singing voice, with hints of Amy Winehouse, and her arrestingly arrhythmic flow.
