Filmers@Large: Lowers Freesurfs
Mick Fanning's freesurfs are evidence that he was clearly the apex predator at Lowers.
We're entering the time of year when Mick Fanning transforms into "Super-Mick Fanning." When he's in the hunt for a world title, the business end of the season is when the inner-champion shows up in the three-time king of the surfing world.
In 2007, 2009 and 2013, his championship run became palpable over the North American and European legs. In team sports, they say it's not the best team that wins out, but the hottest team that walks away with the trophy. And those years, no one was hotter down the stretch than Fanning.
When he's on, he simply has another gear. He pushes that much harder. With prey in his sights, he becomes the apex predator on tour, with the killer instinct to match. This year feels like one of those years. He's got that look about him.
Just ask Adriano De Souzaand Julian Wilson, whose surfing is also on display above. Fanning's blown by both of them in the rankings to take a firm hold on that No. 1 spot. Whether he's in a jersey or freesurfing, the form is undeniably brilliant. While surely you've seen the WSL highlights of his win at Lowers, this clip articulates just how he got there to that podium – arcing and slashing his way to the top of the world.
