About the event
Theaster Gates’ Rebuild Foundation has made a mission of preserving black art, music, culture, and physical spaces. Black Monastic extends this practice. Specially curated by Gates himself and featuring pioneering Chicago musicians Yaw Agyeman, Kiara Lanier, Ben LaMar Gay, Joshua Abrams, ADaD, and more, the show is an exploration into the history of black sound. Complementing this performance is Peter CottonTale, best known for his work as Chance the Rapper’s musical director. His curation, CatchPeter presents Praise Break, will bring together a host of young talent infusing gospel into Chicago’s present day sound: The JuJu Exchange, Ron Poindexter, Jay Arnold, and more. Set in the lush greenery of Chicago’s Garfield Park Conservatory, Black Monastic will sprawl through the space in a powerfully immersive performance examining black music past and present.
