Given the sharpness of her performances and the addictiveness of her beats, Noga Erez doesn’t really need to have anything much to say for herself on the motivation front. But this 26-year-old from Tel Aviv has plenty.
Born four days before the outbreak of the Gulf War to parents who met on military service, she has always had an ‘in your face’ relationship with politics. Her debut album, Off The Radar, has received comparisons to MIA for its combination of clattering rhythms, wonk-pop hooks and serious socio-political beef.
Here Erez plays two tracks from her debut record, in the company of co-writer, composer and producer Ori Rousso. The title track is about our need for recognition and social acceptance, and how it leaves us open to manipulation. The stark and jittery electronics of Dance While You Shoot, meanwhile, frame an urgent conversation between Erez and her country about the dark side of government. If only all 2017’s new acts were this edgy, compulsive and politically charged.
