You might not recognize Om’Mas Keith on the street — which would be a shame, considering what a sharp dresser he is — but you definitely know his work. Every time you spin Frank Ocean’s "channel ORANGE," you hear Keith's eclectic influences, inspired past and deft ear in the critically acclaimed album’s production. It’s that inimitable talent that earned him a Grammy, and it’s his deep roots and strong upbringing that have guided him from Queens to Los Angeles.
In "Om’Mas Keith: Across the Board" — a new documentary short film about Keith's career, musically gifted family and friends — the multi-talented musician and songwriter opens up about his parents (both avant-garde jazz musicians), the importance of family in his life (including his spunky grandmother) and his personal journey to become one of the most thoughtful and insightful producers working in the music industry today.
"Don’t back me in a corner," Keith says about his internal thought process as he ventured off alone at the height of his group Sa-Ra's popularity. "Don’t put me in a position where I don’t know my future because I’ve been writing my future since I was a child."
See the origins of this self-confidence and hear from Keith’s colleagues and friends (including Erykah Badu, Anderson . Paak, John Legend and Ty Dolla $ign) in thedocumentary here. And make sure to check out an exclusive deleted scene, in which Keith's knowledge and passion for vintage analog recording equipment and instruments is revealed, below.
