Snowboarding
Pat Moore and some pro snowboarder buddies have a great day of riding and hope for a record, too.
On Thursday, April 28, in Copper Mountain, Colorado, the stage was set for Pat Moore and his pro snowboarder invitees Peter Line, Luke Mitrani, Jack Mitrani, Austin Sweeten and Shayne Pospisil to have a great day of riding. They were there to root Pat on as he took on the monumental challege of attempting to break the world snowboard height record of 32.15 feet.
We’ve been talking about it for a few years now and it never came to be, but this year everything has come together and we are now knee-deep in it,” Moore commented. “With the quarterpipe almost finished I'm getting more and excited to get started riding.
Setting the Stage
With fingers crossed for a break in the weather, the week was spread out. Time was spent preparing the massive quarter (nearly 35 feet tall and almost 100 feet wide) for a good shot at sunny skies. Snow in late April seemed unlikely, but as everyone gathered at Copper it became a reality with blizzard-like conditions in the early part of the week that slowed the project down.
Even with all of the weather struggles, the team from Snow Park Technologies did an absolutely amazing job of keeping the quarterpipe groomed and safe for Pat and his crew.
Thursday was the day. We finally got a break in the weather -- the sun was out and we had blue bird conditions. Locals commented that it was one of the greatest weather days they had seen in weeks. The stage was set.
Pat started by taking some warm-up runs, checking speed and snow conditions and getting an overall feel for what it was going to take to break this world record.
With every run getting more intense and closer to the goal, everyone involved with the project grew more and more excited to see Pat set his own world-record mark.
Going For It
He knew that breaking the record would take more speed, so he kept moving higher up the mountain, pushing harder downhill and even wrote the word “faster” on his board to keep him focused on the task at hand.
The photo below shows the highest Pat would get all day — less than two feet from the world record. The high experienced in this run was quickly cut short when Pat deck-cased from over 31 feet out in a horrifying wreck that ended his amazing day.
With Pat obviously injured and unable to continue the world record attempt, the mood was somber and everyone was concerned about Pat’s injuries as he was taken by ambulance to the local hospital. Knowing what Pat would have wanted, the decision was made to continue the day and the filming. Hours passed by without an update from the hospital…
After a historic photo/film shoot went down with all of Pat’s friends, the focus changed to identifying Pat’s condition. The anticipation of the phone call was intense, and we were thrilled to finally hear that all x-rays were clear of broken bones and all cat scans came back with positive results.
In fact, Pat miraculously announced he would be attending the Red Bull dinner the final evening. Everybody was stoked to see him there and know that he was in good health, ending the week on a very positive note.
