When it comes to snow bikes, there are many questions that remain unanswered. Though the concept of snow bikes has been around for decades, it wasn’t until the last few seasons that the sport started to progress to the high level we’re seeing today.
Watch Ronnie Renner, Robbie Maddison, Darren Berrecloth, Reagan Seig, Brock Buttars and Brett Blaser tear up the back country in the four edits throughout this story.

"Powder Hounds: Episode 1"

Powder Hounds Episode 1: The history of snow bikes and progressing the sport into new locations.

The limits are being pushed further and further with each season seeing bigger lines, jumps and new terrain explored. At the tail end of the 2017 season, a crew of legends set out over the course of a few weeks to shred terrain both old and new and created a four-part series called ‘Powder Hounds.’

Episode 2 of 4: the history of snowbikes and progressing the sport into new locations.

The series inadvertently highlights one of the more interesting things about snow bikes; the eclectic group of riders that have taken to them. The reason for that is the skill sets of quite a few disciplines across the world of action sports cross-over pretty well, allowing riders to adapt to the snow bike. A perfect example of this? Freeride mountain bike legend Darren Berrecloth. A Red Bull Rampage regular, Berrecloth spent last winter keeping his free ride skills sharp via snow bikes in the backcountry of British Columbia, the bikes might be completely different but going big is going big on dirt or snow.

Powder Hounds: Episode 3

Episode 3 of 4 covering the history of snowbikes and progressing the sport into new locations.

Berrecloth was joined by fellow snow bike rookie and freestyle motocross legend Robbie Maddison. Ronnie Renner and two of snow biking's best, Regan Sieg and Brock Buttars round out the crew. These three are the more experienced of the bunch, spending time filming together over the last few seasons.
Another big draw for riders has been that there is still so much winter terrain that has yet to be explored with motorized vehicles. Back country exploration during the winter months has traditionally been done via snow mobiles. While it’s safe to say that snow mobiles aren’t going anywhere any time soon, the opportunity to explore new terrain has been opened up by the fact that snow bikes are far more nimble than snow mobiles. Chutes that were traditionally only rideable via ski or snowboard, are now being explored by the worlds elite snow bike riders.

"Powder Hounds: Episode 4"

Episode 4 of 4 covering the history of snow bikes and progressing the sport into new locations.

The rapid progression of the sport is due to both the elite crop of riders that have come forward from disciplines to push the limits, but also due to the progression of the bikes themselves. Companies like Polaris are actively funding progress of bikes, most notably their bike which is called the ‘Timbersled.’ The work that has gone into development over just the last five years have put the sport on the map and there’s no telling how far the sport could go over the course of the next five.
