Alpine skiing is without a doubt the pinnacle of skiing in terms of finely honed technique, intense competition and high-end technology. But the usual sports broadcast doesn’t showcase what’s going into the feats that top athletes pull off race after race.
Yes, we do see crazy close-ups, new bird’s-eye perspectives, lightening-fast cable cam follow shots, comparative line overlays, split times and we’re being spoon-fed stats about medal counts, cup standings, life-time rankings and so on.
But we don’t get to know the athletes behind their ski masks. We don’t see the sweat and tears that go into their year-round physical training, or into healing and coming back from severe injuries. We don’t see the hours and hours of work their teams invest in wax-fumed basements to prep the skis with finely tuned layers for each section of the course’s snow condition, or how several coaches prep the icy training courses eight hours at a time for only six training runs.

Watch a fascinating POV video filmed by ski racer Felix Neureuther and freeskier Sven Kühnle:

Oh no! This video is currently not available.

We don’t learn what’s going into these split-second differences that make or break an alpine skiing star. If the time differences between the best athletes are merely a blink of an eye – how come that time and time again the same racers are at the top of the game? Not seeing the whole picture of alpine skiing’s reality, we can’t honour the lifelong investment of its stars and teams appropriately.
