After a year of planning and preparing, pro freeriders and adventurers Matthias ‘Hauni’ Haunholder and Matthias Mayr finally made it Siberia for their next challenge.
After experiencing one of their biggest adventures on a volcanic island in Russia last winter, known as The Onekotan Project, the two took on their next target. Sitting in the Chersky mountain massif in Jakutien, in north-east Russia is Gora Pobeda – the highest mountain in East Siberia and a blank spot on their maps.
No one has ever skied here before and there's a good reason for that. Due to its remote location, the mountain is said to be extremely difficult to ascend. The north face, with its 60 degree-steep slope, is covered in ice and the south face is also extremely steep and littered with rocks.
On top of all this, the region is one of the coldest areas in the world. Temperatures of -60 degrees Celsius are quite normal – and perfect for the two freeriders.
The only support Hauni, Matthias and their team could count on was a nomad family living in close proximity to the mountain massif.
The contrast between the extreme cold and the beauty of the landscape couldn't be bigger. The White Maze captivates the viewer with fantastic shots of this almost-unknown territory. The film premiered on October 12, 2016 at the Oval cinema in Salzburg, Austria.
