There is expert terrain. There are double black diamond drop-offs. And then there is the run called Rambo.
The steepest sustained ski run in America is only 300 yards long, but it’s certain to make an impression on even the most skilled skier or rider. While many notorious steep runs flatten out after a few turns, Rambo, located at Colorado’s Crested Butte Mountain Resort, maintains a pitch of 55 degrees from top to bottom.
Your ski tips will dangle off the edge at the top, and you’ll need to be fully committed from your first turn. The slope is so vertical that snow tends to slough downhill, leaving the top a bit rocky, but the conditions improve as you navigate downhill.
“Standing at the top is definitely the scariest point, but once you’re about a third of the way down, the lines become nearly perfect and you can arc giant slalom turns,” said Zach Pickett, a spokesperson for Crested Butte and longtime veteran of Rambo. “Because Rambo is so steep, skiers and riders need to be 100 percent focused from top to bottom. The entire run is a no-fall zone.”
