Watch the epic cold-water surf film Under an Arctic Sky
Legendary outdoor adventure photographer Chris Burkard leads a crew of devoted surfers into one of Iceland's biggest storms in decades and emerges with one of the best surf films in its history.
For the vast majority of professional surfers, the Northern Hemisphere winter means one primary destination: Hawaii, where the waves are guaranteed to be big and the ocean temperature bathwater warm.
For a select few other pros however, winter means being on call for one of the great outdoor adventure photographers of our time, Chris Burkard, who's made it his life's mission to uncover, travel to and score many of the best, coldest waves on the planet.
No film captures Burkard's thirst for the freezing better than the 2017 documentary Under an Arctic Sky, which is directed by Burkard himself and filmed by longtime travel partner, Ben Weiland.

And those pro surfers who eschewed the tropical promise of winter in Hawaii? Well, they've got their own impressive cold-water credentials.
New Jersey's Sam Hammer and California's Timmy Reyes and Justin Quintal have all made careers out of scoring away from the beaten path. Guiding this ace American team of photographers and surfers was, of course, Iceland's top surfing trio: Elli Thor Magnusson, Heiðar Logi and Ingo Olsen.
Under an Arctic Sky follows these adventurers as they chase a swell to the remote fjords of Iceland's Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. Chartering a boat with Captain Sigurdur Jonsson, they depart from the town of Ísafjörður, but on their heels is the largest storm to make landfall in Iceland in 25 years.
Knowing the legendary swell that such a storm could spawn, the crew pushes deeper into the unknown as raging weather bears down on them, risking their lives. The outcome isn't what they expect, but epic nonetheless.
