The Convention promises a range of geek and gaming awesomeness. Adding to that flavour esports is going to be a big role at the convention with various titles and tournaments showcased throughout the weekend. Here’s the best esports action we know about, so far:
Nintendo Elite 4 Challenge - Pokemon Let’s Go
Nintendo’s Elite 4 competition kickstarts the Con on Saturday morning. For the past few months Pokemon Let’s Go trainers have been competing in monthly battles with the top players earning a spot at the Elite 4 final at Comic Con. The best trainers will battle it out on the Nintendo Stage in the final battles to determine the Elite 4 trainers in South Africa and the eventual winner.
Nintendo Super Smash Bros Ultimate Gold Series - Super Smash Bros Ultimate
After lunch on Saturday Nintendo continues to the esports fun with their Super Smash Bros Ultimate Gold Series. The best Smash Bros players from around the country were determined in a host of qualifiers and will now descend on Comic Con Africa to battle it out and be named the ultimate champion. The fighting game has gained huge popularity around the world, being one of the most watched titles at EVO 2019, and South Africa’s growing scene promises to bring noise.
VS Gaming Masters - DOTA 2 and CSGO
The VS Gaming Masters Championships returns to Comic Con for a second year. The best Dota 2 and CSGO teams in the country have been battling it out for months and will now face off for the final competition on the main stage at the Convention. The league operated by VS Gaming has been in existence for many years and was one of the first professional leagues set up in South Africa. The foundation of this competition runs far deeper than the bright lights and fancy stage you’ll see. Both titles will run on the VS Gaming stage with CSGO taking place on the Friday and Sunday and Dota 2 happening on the Monday and Tuesday. It’s a great opportunity to see the very best esports athletes from South Africa in the flesh and promises to offer up a substantial prize pool as well.
Red Bull Hit the Streets Qualifier - Street Fighter V
Anyone will be able to enter during the convention and play (though there is a 32 player cap). For more information on how to get in on the action, take a look here:
Mortal Kombat, PUBG (YES PUBG) and even Sim Racing
While we’ve included the tournaments that have had their details released there are a few others that have been confirmed - but more details have yet to be released. We can confirm a Mortal Kombat 11 King of the Hill competition will be taking place with a prize pool of R10 000. KFC is one of the headline sponsors for this year’s Comic Con and to celebrate a little “winner winner Chicken Dinner”, they’ll be hosting a PUBG Tournament with a R50 000 prize pool. The PUBG competition will run on PC, anyone will be able to enter throughout the convention and spot prizes will be up for grabs on top of the finger licking good prize pool. No word yet on tournament format. While not confirmed officially, rumour is that ATK Arena will be hosting a Sim Racing competition at their stand throughout the weekend. Reportedly, the use of a real life fancy car for one year is the prize for the ultimate winner, but more details will be released closer to the event.
Regardless of your game preference or whether you’re a top tier competitor or just want to try your luck on the day, there is something for every esports fan this year!
