Red Bull Music presents Beyond the Sound with DJ Tira
For his Red Bull Music presents Beyond the Sound performance, DJ Tira dug deep into his discography to deliver a 20 minute DJ set featuring a number of his chart-toppers. The Afrotainment founder also took time to discuss his journey, acknowledge his mentors, highlighting the importance of knowledge as well as defining what success means to him.

Regarding his musical education, DJ Tira cites Oskido, DJ Fresh, Glen Lewis and Black Coffee as figures that helped him get where he is today. “We did parties with [Oskido], [DJ} Fresh helped me put together Durban’s Finest, the first album that we did. Glen Lewis helped me to put together the first compilation we did with Thabzela. So these guys have helped me in my journey. Of course, the guy I’m constantly chatting to, getting advice from, is Black Coffee because I think he’s really done well and he’s still going very far.”
Gaining knowledge and surrounding oneself with the right people is important for DJ Tira. He believes that learning from other experiences and using that to build is key. “You need to have the knowledge. You need to associate with the right people. Sometimes you just need to go to a place so that you can learn & experience the scene to understand where you’re going. So it’s always nice to visit places like Ibiza, check out the parties, how they do their business then come back and try to use some of that knowledge here in South Africa.”

DJ Tira defines success as happiness and one way he achieves this is through helping others. “To be able to put other guys on, that’s very important. If I look around me I can see a lot of people that I’ve helped and see a lot of people that I’m still helping, for me that’s success. Changing someone’s life is very important. Doesn’t matter what I’ve got really. As long as I’m happy, my family is good, everyone around me is good, that’s success for me and I think that’s gonna happen for a while because I’ve got this giving heart that’s gonna keep on giving.”
