Jonny Walker – 5 ways to defeat The Iron Giant
Exclusive: Red Bull Hare Scramble champion Jonny Walker reveals how to conquer the Erzbergrodeo.
He’s only 24 years old but Jonny has already won the world’s toughest enduro race twice. Since his Red Bull Hare Scramble win last year, KTM’s Jonny Walkerhas dominated extreme enduro.
He followed his triumph with victory at Red Bull Romaniacs last year and Hell's Gate and The Tough One in 2015. He arrives on the Iron Mountain at Eisenerz with his eyes on a third Erzberg victory and a hat trick of 2015 Extreme Enduro wins.
He’s taken everything Erzberg’s Iron Giant could throw at him to win the Red Bull Hare Scramble in 2012 and 2014. He's aiming for a third victory, but with a field including the threats of Taddy Blazusiak and Graham Jarvis, he is under no illusion that a huge challenge lies ahead of him.
Here he reveals the five elements he has to get right to win on Sunday.

The Erzbergrodeo is back. Check out the best action from the Red Bull Hare Scramble 2014.
1. Please the weather gods
I’ve never been to a place where it can literally be all seasons in one day. The weather can be crazy but I suppose it’s apt for a crazy race like this. Everyone remembers the floods of 2013 – it was like the Apocalypse. I’d never seen anything like it in my life. Before that it was so hot it was like a furnace. The best thing is to pack for snow, rain, wind and sun – just be ready for everything!

Red Bull Hare Scramble by numbers
Erzbergrodeo is back. We crunch the numbers and look at the stats from the Red Bull Hare Scramble.
2. Make sure you’re in peak condition
The Red Bull Hare Scramble is the toughest enduro race in the world for very good reason. It tries to sap every ounce of strength, energy and determination to succeed out of your body. Every mile of the race becomes increasingly harder and harder. Fitness is a major key for survival in a race like this. Fail to prepare, then prepare to fail.
3. Get ahead of the pack
My biggest opponent is the Iron Giant itself. She can either love you or hate you. My dad always says that to finish first, first you’ve got to finish and for a race like the Red Bull Hare Scramble he’s bloody right! But yeah, of course there’s 499 other riders lined up on that quarry floor ready for battle. Graham Jarvis is an incredible rider – he can never be counted out. To beat him you’ve got to be at your absolute best. He pushes me to my limits, we race hard but we laugh and joke about it even harder when it’s all over. It’s awesome to have Taddy Blazusiak back for 2015. He’s won here five times in a row – that’s insane. Then there’s Alfredo Gómez and also Mario Roman, who could be the dark horse in this race.
4. Don’t lose your way
This is going to be my fifth time racing the Red Bull Hare Scramble and even though I’ve won it twice it’s still tough to remember exactly where I’m going. The quarry is so huge – it’s ridiculously big – so many things look the same. We walk the important sections beforehand, but it’s the maze of trails and paths scattered around the mountain that make you feel sort of lost. At times we’re just riding on instinct – senses in overdrive – scanning the horizon for any hazards or sheer drops that lie ahead. For a race like Erzberg you need 100 percent focus to succeed.
5. Ride your luck
We spend weeks if not months preparing for a race like Erzberg but luck can play such an important part in the result. And that’s something we just can’t plan for. Personally I’ve experienced both the good and bad at Erzberg. Last year it felt like I could do no wrong whereas the previous year the Iron Giant was a cruel, cruel mistress. All you can do on race day is just give it your best shot. Stay out of trouble as best you possibly can and hope the cards fall your way.
