With a decade of OCR experience, van Tonder has drawn inspiration from some of the best obstacles worldwide to create challenges that are both exciting and demanding. He explains, “The design of my obstacle was aimed to challenge participants in each aspect individually, keeping an element of fun in all of them.”
Van Tonder is no stranger to the global OCR scene. He has earned accolades for his performances at international events and is known for his record-breaking tower-running feats. Empowering Athletes

The Red Bull Ibiza Royale is committed to inclusivity, encouraging both men and women to step out of their comfort zones. The event promotes teamwork, agility, and resilience, inspiring participants to achieve new fitness goals.
To highlight the spirit of the challenge, two competitors, Matthew Stone and Rachel O’Connor, were interviewed to share their perspectives and preparation strategies. Both athletes represent different facets of the fitness world, bringing unique experiences and enthusiasm to the event.
Matthew Stone is a hybrid athlete with a strong background in endurance sports and functional fitness. His approach to training combines adaptability with a focus on overall athletic performance. “This event offers a unique opportunity to push my limits, explore new terrains, and engage in high-energy competition in a stunning setting,” says Stone. His participation underscores the event’s appeal to individuals who thrive on adventure and variety.
Rachel O’Connor, an avid ultramarathon runner, brings a fresh perspective to the event. Known for her competitive spirit and passion for endurance sports, O’Connor is currently training for the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon. She sees the Ibiza Royale as a chance to break away from the running community and engage with a diverse group of athletes. “I am very much looking forward to meeting, interacting with, learning from, and competing against people from not only diverse sporting backgrounds but also diverse personal perspectives and worldviews,” she shares. O’Connor’s preparation includes a focus on strength and conditioning, ensuring she is ready for whatever the course throws at her.

Expert Insights

Van Tonder provides valuable advice for those aiming to excel in high-level competitions like the Ibiza Royale. He emphasises the importance of balancing strength and running, stating, “The approach I take is to focus on my weakest link, and then try and improve my strongest link.” He also highlights the significance of mental preparation, suggesting that athletes should rehearse conquering obstacles in their minds and develop strategies beforehand.
For those considering applying, Rachel offers advice on creating standout video submissions: “Focus on what makes you unique and what makes you stand out from the crowd. Be yourself, speak your mind, and remember that famous saying, ‘If you want to get somewhere fast, go alone. If you want to get far, go together.’ Your community and team are your greatest strength.”
