Red Bull Music Presents: FORMS

Step up for an epic, multi-artist collaboration of the highest possible order. Three art forms dance, music and film combined on a single canvas in an audiovisual explosion!

A coming together of three creative forces, FORMS sees hip-hop artist Rouge, choreographer Rudi Smit and director Alex Fynn collaborate on a dance music video that highlights their respective talents and presents it in one neat package. Set in an apocalyptic future, circa 2034, where groups are forbidden from mobilising and are closely monitored to prevent them from challenging the overarching control of the city, a small mob of individuals comes together under the leadership of Rouge to unite against the system. “The aim of the mob is to make some sort of powerful but peaceful statement that challenges the security. That they don’t have the power to stop these rebels from being united for change.” explains director Alex Fynn.
It was a state of me doing literally what I wanted. That’s the reason why when they asked me for a song I wanted to use this one, because this is one of those songs where people didn’t expect me to do much with it and I feel like it was one of the best songs.

The inspiration for this narrative came from a conversation between Rouge and Alex Fynn in which she explained that the chorus was a war cry. “The hook is just a war cry that kids in high school usually say when they’re about to run. Just to get people hyped.” Rouge notes. The track itself was written in a very positive space and saw Rouge having fun with it rather than feeling like everything needs to be thought out. “It was a state of me doing literally what I wanted. That’s the reason why when they asked me for a song I wanted to use this one, because this is one of those songs where people didn’t expect me to do much with it and I feel like it was one of the best songs.”
The whole project is about unity and how we are all one and we all stand together. So I think it was very important for me to create strong aesthetic and something that looks clean and unified and sharp.

When it came to the choreography Rudi Smit drew all his inspiration from the music. “The music is key for me. I have to be inspired by the music. So everything that came out literally happened in studio.” he says. The narrative also played a role in determining the style of choreography. “The whole project is about unity and how we are all one and we all stand together. So I think it was very important for me to create strong aesthetic and something that looks clean and unified and sharp.”
A long-standing tradition in dance is to remix tracks specifically for dancers and for FORMS Rudi Smit did the same. “I pitched the idea of adding a dance break, just so that it changes the song up and makes it a little more dynamic from a dancing perspective. So I remixed the song myself. It was just an idea that I pitched to Alex that he then liked, that Rouge then liked and we went with it.”
For Rouge the addition of the dance break was a nice addition to the track. “I come from an age when dancing was at that point of the Masters of Rhythm and Strictly Hip Hop and all these dance events. So that is something that I’d seen really often. When he asked me I felt like that’s something you don’t even need to ask. It’s going to be something very new to the ear for people who have already heard the song and for people who haven’t heard the song yet.”
I really like that futuristic atmosphere and dance has always been something that I’ve loved. That’s really my favourite part. That dance is celebrated 100% in this video.

When it comes to highlights of the video each of the creatives involved have their own. For Alex Fynn it is the concept. “I really like that futuristic atmosphere and dance has always been something that I’ve loved. That’s really my favourite part. That dance is celebrated 100% in this video.” Rudi Smit is drawn to the futurism of the video. “I really love that this futuristic world has been created. It doesn’t feel like something that you can see right now.” Rouge loved what Rudi did. “The change that Rudi had made to the beat and the dance there, incredible. And of course when I come out! That is also an epic moment, that’s when you see Rouge.”
An audio-visual feast, FORMS is a celebration of collaboration between dance, music and film, highlighting the fact that when working together they can create something even more powerful than the sum of their parts.
