Respect. That’s what FKTs, aka ‘fastest known times’ are all about. There’s no reward or prize money – a pure mountain-running challenge to see who is the fastest on a particular trail. FKTs are usually set on trails where races wouldn’t normally be held and it’s not difficult to see why they are capturing the imagination of the trail-running world.
Since Killian Jornet set the speed record on Kilimanjaro in 2010 (7 hours 14 minutes round-trip, overtaken by Karl Egloff, 6 hours 42 minutes and 24 seconds round trip on 13 August 2014) bagging FKTs on famous trails (and peaks) has become something of a must-have CV item among the ultra-endurance elite.
Ryan Sandes currently holds the Fish River Canyon and – with expedition partner Ryno Griesel – the Drakensberg Grand Traverse FKT. Now he wants to do it in his backyard, on the Table Mountain trails where he trains every day, but for a different reason than bragging rights.
“I want to get people out of their comfort zones,” explains Sandes of his motivation behind the project. “Perhaps more importantly though, I want to share the mountain with everyone else. Table Mountain is my back garden and without doubt one of the most epic places I’ve ever run,” he says.
Sandes also believes FKTs are a great way to get people out exploring and running without necessarily having to enter races. “That, and they’re happening around the world and it would be quite cool to do something similar for Cape Town,” he says.
Earlier today, Friday 27 March, Sandes laid down the challenge by running the route in 02h02m13s, setting the FKT for the 15.1km route.

Theres more to the Table Mountain FKT project than that, though: There is a prize for taking on the challenge - and no, you don't need to get the FKT to win.

Record your attempt at the Table Mountain FKT and you and a friend could join Ryan Sandes’ support crew at the Grande Raid Réunion in October.
You'll be able to pit yourself against Sandes’ time using any GPS device or the Strava App. A simple registration process and uploading the GPS data from your run is all it takes to get on the leaderboard.
Then get out there. Go now.
