Jakinda is a Cape Town-based conceptual artist originally from Johannesburg. His work is an exploration of afro-futurism, black masculinity and a spiritual journey of self-discovery. His latest EP, released in January 2017, is a culmination of Jakinda’s Afro-futurist influences inspired by traditional Zulu, Masai, Ethiopian and Tanzanian music. He is also one half of the recently formed electronic music duo Stiff Pap, with AyemaProbllem, which is growing healthily both locally and internationally. Here he shares 5 of his favourite tracks.
Faka - Isfundo Sokuqala
I discovered Faka's music early last year and this was the song I first came across. It was so different and I just loved it. The video is incredible and it works so well with the song.I definitely looked to them for inspiration when I was making my first beats.
Bongeziwe Mabandla - Ndokulandela
I had never really known about Bongeziwe until he was headlining an event in Woodstock last month, alongside Petite Noir. I went there as a huge Petite Noir fan, but left blown away by the voice and overall performance of Bongeziwe and his band. This song was definitely a highlight of the whole day.
Nazlee Arbee - The Wake Up Call
Nazlee has been one of my best friend's ever since I arrived in Cape Town. I have been privileged enough to watch Naz grow and evolve as an artist, to the point where they finally shared this beautiful audio-visual piece with the public. I can't wait to hear and see what Naz will release next.
Jumping Back Slash ft. Nonku Phiri - The Siren's Call
I approached JBS last year after catching his Boiler Room set and asked him to have a listen to my music and give me feedback and that was probably one of the smartest decisions I made last year. Since then he has been my go to for advice on new music and navigating the scene in general. This song shows how versatile JBS is and the beauty of Nonku's voice just takes me to another world.
AyemaProbllem - Baragash Freestyle
As someone who's worked quite closely with Ayema I'm always amazed by how versatile his flow and rhymes can be. This song is a refreshing vibe and so different to our style as Stiff Pap or even his other solo songs. I really feel like Ayema has matured as an artist and is only going to get better.
