Genova is a city built for drama, and not just on the downhill stage. Rising from the Ligurian coastline to the steep hillsides behind, its streets climb, twist and rapidly descend with a rhythm all of their own.
Narrow stone laneways known as caruggi wind through the old town, opening suddenly into sunlit piazzas before disappearing into tight corners and shaded staircases. The historic creuze, the sloping pedestrian paths linking hilltop neighbourhoods to the sea, are lined with centuries-old walls and uneven paving – all features which make Genova an urban rider’s dream, with every descent demanding a mix of speed, precision and split-second decision making.

As the only European stop on the Red Bull Cerro Abajo 2025/26 calendar, Genova's unique terrain and urban landscape served up spectacular views for spectators, and super-technical challenges for the riders from start to finish.

The Red Bull Genova Cerro Abajo track

The 2025/26 Red Bull Genova Cerro Abajo course followed the same adrenaline-spiked 2.2 kilometre route as its inaugural year in the World Series, merging 17 purpose-built structures along the track into the city’s complex terrain, with one significant change right at the start.

Riders began the tough descent by dropping from the Zecca–Righi funicular into an even taller opening descent, now around three metres high. From there they threaded through a sequence of fast drops over the stairwell, a straight section and a jump over ground-level poles before hitting the first major test – the “sharkfin”.
This sharp cut in the course fired them five metres down to the road below, demanding absolute precision. After roughly 300 metres, the pace lifted again with a huge air jump stretching up to 14 metres, depending on entry speed. A tight 180-degree turn dropped them into the caruggi, where the narrow, twisting steps demanded total courage and control.
The line here can decide entire runs, and only the best riders chose to brake late and carry as much speed as possible into the next feature. An epic wall ride followed, then a tight S-curve before the riders launched over a wild ten metre road gap, flying between buildings into a small square.

The closing sector served up the “mega sharkfin”, a bigger, bolder version of the earlier feature, cutting between houses and through a tunnel-like passage. From there, the run was a mix of speed and precision: another wall ride, a steeply banked corner, a drop onto more steps, and then a flat-out charge to the finish at Largo della Zecca.
