After an incredible League of Legends World Championship run, G2 Esports can stand proud of their achievements. Despite falling to second place against FunPlus Phoenix in the grand final, it’s been a monumental year for the LEC team and they’ve taken down some of the world’s top teams on the international stage, not to mention winning back-to-back domestic titles and the Mid-Season Invitational on top of that.
With their Worlds run all wrapped up, they displayed not only incredible individual skill, but also the ability to bring that all together and perform as a team.
Join us as we celebrate their top-10 plays and moments of Worlds and relive G2 Esports’ best World Championship performance to date.
1. Introducing G2 Esports
When we’re talking about G2 Esports’ Worlds highlights reel, their introductions need to be included as well. Everytime the European powerhouse were introduced, they came up with some fantastic introductions. Here, we have Rasmus ‘Caps’ Winther’s introduction during the Group Stage, which dropped the classic ‘Claps or Craps’ meme. Luckily for this whole tournament, Claps was on full show throughout.
2. G2 Esports vs Griffin – Group Stage
Luka ‘Perkz’ Perković was one of the first bot-laners – if not the first – to popularise mages in the bot lane. He showcased his expertise on champions like Syndra and Zoe earlier this year in the main LEC season and during the Worlds Group Stage, he picked Zoe against Griffin, their final opponent during Groups.
While G2 Esports ended up losing the game and becoming the second seed of their group in the process, this insane Perkz moment was one of the most memorable during the match. Perkz did everything right here to avoid certain death by using Zoe’s ultimate to negate all the incoming damage, but it wasn’t enough to fully turn the tide.
3. G2 Esports vs Hong Kong Attitude – Group Stage
Marcin ‘Jankos’ Jankowski is known in Europe for his extremely aggressive early game jungling and Olaf is one of his signature picks. This play shows exactly why. He managed to pick up a triple kill while tower diving not even 20 minutes into the game. He survived as the camera panned to the topside, where Caps picked up a solo kill with his Ryze. This clip shows exactly what G2 Esports are about: high intensity gameplay mixed in with individual outplays. Raw talent meets great decision making and team play – there’s certainly no other team like this.
4. G2 Esports vs DAMWON Gaming, Game 3 – Quarterfinals
G2 played every single Korean seed on their road to the finals. In the quarterfinals against DAMWON, Perkz once again stepped up to carry his team in multiple key moments. DAMWON kept on picking scaling compositions, which meant that the initiative was on G2 Esports to end the game as fast as possible.
With G2 at the gates of DAMWON’s base, they had to make something happen to break the game open. Perkz picked up a magical double kill with some great usage of his Kai’Sa ultimate to smash the door wide open – and to help begin closing the game.
5. G2 Esports vs DAMWON Gaming, Game 4 – Quarterfinals
The fourth and final game of the quarterfinals match against DAMWON Gaming was a highlight reel in itself. G2 Esports picked up the tempo after a few slow games in the series and decided to camp top lane. Martin 'Wunder' Hansen, Caps and Jankos made sure that DAMWON’s top-laner was not going to have a fun game. After a few heavy ganks, Jang ‘Nuguri’ Ha-gwon’s Irelia left the lane with four deaths, no kills and no assists to her name – all thanks to G2’s dominance.
6. G2 Esports vs DAMWON Gaming, Game 4 – Quarterfinals
Perkz is one of the best Xayah players in the world and this clip showcases exactly why. His ultimate use here alone shows that he has mastered this champion. Most players use the ult to disengage, but Perkz also managed to jump over the Irelia ultimate wall, all whilst in the air, positioning himself where he can then started dishing out damage as he came down. The follow up kill and Perkz destroying the enemy AD was the icing on the cake.
7. G2 Esports vs SK Telecom T1, Game 4 – Semifinals
While G2 Esports were 2,000 gold behind SKT, they managed to create the perfect circumstances for a fight. Jankos zoned Lee ‘Faker’ Sang-hyeok’s Qiyana out of the fight completely. At this point, the majority of SKT’s gold lead was in Qiyana’s great early game. Yet, in this fight, she had no impact.
Caps lived with a sliver of health after dodging some crucial skill shots, while Mihael 'Mikyx' Mehle body slammed Elise just as she was about to kill him to bait out the stopwatch. Every micro decision here made by G2 Esports allowed them to win the fight, which was a huge win in slowing down the game and giving the European team a chance to come back.
8. G2 Esports vs SK Telecom T1, Game 4 – Semifinals
The final moments of the semifinals were simply spectacular. Perkz had just died and SKT decided to use their man advantage to push G2 Esports’ base. As they came in closer and start hitting the inhibitor, G2 Esports decided to engage. They managed to stall the fight long enough for Perkz to respawn and he picked up an insane quadra kill. At the same time, Caps teleported into SKT’s base to end the game by using the open inhibitor that they destroyed during their last push.
9. G2 Esports vs FunPlus Phoenix, Game 1 – Grand Finals
The first game of G2 Esports and FunPlus Phoenix was an extreme version of cat and mouse. G2 tried to use multiple pressure points on the map to split FPX’ strong team-fight composition apart. They used their nimble Pyke and Ryze teleport to make sure that they wouldn’t get caught. In the clip above, both Wunder and Caps almost got caught, but with a last second flash, Caps managed to save himself from certain death.
10. G2 Esports vs FunPlus Phoenix, Game 1 – Grand Finals
G2’s trademark is to never give an objective or kill up for free. They're always looking to trade. Shortly before this play, some members of G2 Esports got caught in the mid-lane. The rest of the team didn't hesitate and rotated to top. They managed to kill an inhibitor and could have even ended the game, if it weren’t for Gao ‘Tian’ Tian-Liang’s game-saving Lee Sin kick.
All throughout Worlds, G2 Esports showed that Europe is filled to the brim with talented players. Every single game that the European first seed played had highlights and great plays. We can’t wait until January to see them play again in the LEC!
