Spectacular course
The race drew downhill racers from all over the globe, including athletes from Germany, France, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, England, Costa Rica, Peru, Mexico and Ecuador. Twenty-five athletes took part in qualifying, but only the 10 fastest had a run in finals. The fastest qualifier was Gutiérrez.
More than 1,500 steps make up the Monserrate track, which is mainly a cobbled path down from the famed Monserrate church on the mountain that overlooks Colombia's capital city. It also boasts 27 obstacles/features, including wallrides, gap jumps and a tunnel. The course, which measures 2.4km, is recognised by Guinness World Records as the longest urban downhill race in the world.
Rain overnight and overcast conditions made for slippery conditions
This is the fifth time the mythical Monserrate trail has become a downhill track. The first version was held in 2012 when Filip Polc took the win. It ran again in 2019 when Marcelo Gutiérrez took the win, followed by wins by Tomáš Slavík and Adrien Loren in 2020 and 2021.
