Matisse Thybulle
Born in Scottsdale, Arizona, Matisse (named after French artist Henry Matisse) moved with his family to Australia at the age of two, where he spent many of his formative years before returning to the States in third grade.
A lover of many different sports, Matisse’s gift for basketball emerged in high school. After starring for Eastside Catholic for two years, he joined the University of Washington as a four-star recruit in 2015, where he became the first player in school history to be named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year.
Around that same time, Matisse gained a new hobby of photography, inspired by his closest friends. At first, he just tagged along on shoots, watching and asking questions. That developed into Matisse getting his own camera. And after he captured a photo at Snoqualmie Falls in Washington, his hobby became a full-blown passion.
Like watching game film, Matisse spent hours and hours watching photography YouTube videos, learning more and more. He sought out professionals as he was teaching himself and continued shooting with his friends. This devotion led to his photos being displayed at the Philadelphia 76ers Crossover: Art Exhibition in November 2019.
In 2020, Matisse launched a personal vlog highlighting his dry wit, stellar personality and intuitive knack for quality content. That combination has garnered him more than 400K YouTube subscribes and an average of a million views per episode.
The photography community inspired Matisse to discover a new passion and master the craft. It’s an experience that he wants to continue and give to others.
