Music doesn’t tend to be very good at saying no to FOMO (fear of missing out). Whether it’s the dancefloor or the boudoir, most tracks like to be right in the heart of the action. But Denmark’s M.I.L.K. are as chilled as their name suggests, with laid-back summer grooves and sweet off-centre lyrics. Frontman Emil Wilk could well be the new posterboy for JOMO – the joy of missing out.
Wilk grew up on Bornholm, "the sunshine island" of Denmark, listening to Curtis Mayfield and Chuggy Otis. He always wrote “little poems”, and was friends with a musician and a programmer. When he had the chance to visit a studio, he started putting his words to funk grooves and subtle programmed beats, soon drawing comparisons to Jungle and Leisure.
In this See. Hear. Now. session, you can watch M.I.L.K. play recent single Rebound, which remains smoothly optimistic in the face of being (for now at any rate) dumped, and If We Want To, lead track of their debut EP A Memory Of A Memory Of A Postcard.
With its delicately clicking beats and gleams of brass, the latter is about lying on the beach with your girl at the start of the summer, and whispering away the urges to be anywhere else.
