Minnesota may be known for its lakes and cold winters, but beneath the snowy surface lies a passion for motorsports. With an ever-expanding racing scene, Minnesota has become a hub for auto racing enthusiasts. The state’s race tracks aren’t just venues — they’re arenas of excitement, entertainment, and community engagement. Whether it’s seasoned or brand new fans, these tracks offer something for everyone.
This spirit will be on full display on September 14 at the Red Bull Showrun Minneapolis, promising a spectacle of speed and skill. Let’s take a closer look at the top Minnesota race tracks that are driving the state's racing culture forward.
01

Brainerd International Raceway, Brainerd

Brainerd International Raceway (BIR) stands as a cornerstone in Minnesota’s racing history since 1968, and the Upper Midwest’s largest race track. BIR has hosted numerous exhilarating events, including the Trans Am Series, Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Nationals, and National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Nationals.
This track is renowned for its challenging layout and top tier drag strip. BIR offers two track configurations, with either a 3.1 or 2.5 mile setup. The 2.5 mile road course, with its high-speed turns and long straightaways, tests the limits of both car and driver.
BIR’s drag strip is also home to tons of exciting local races. The MAP Proving Grounds weekend event brings in large crowds for car shows, open lapping, and of course, good old fashioned drag racing. The atmosphere at BIR is electric, a mix of nostalgia and anticipation, as it continues to build on its rich heritage. It's a place where racing legends are born and memories are made.
02

Elko Speedway, Elko New Market

Just a short drive from the Twin Cities, Elko Speedway is a Minnesota motorsport fan favorite. Established in 1965, this 3/8-mile asphalt oval track — one of the nation’s few short NASCAR-sanctioned tracks — has become a staple in Minnesota’s racing scene.
Elko Speedway hosts a variety of events, including the popular Eve of Destruction demolition derby, where fans can witness spectacular stunts and daredevil maneuvers. The atmosphere at Elko Speedway is family-friendly, making it a perfect weekend destination for racing enthusiasts of all ages.
In 2021, Elko Speedway was the smallest track out of all stops in the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) Menards Series. The shorter track length makes its races far more physically challenging for drivers than most courses — and a huge thrill for the fans.
03

Viking Speedway, Alexandria

This is one of the oldest and most cherished dirt tracks in Minnesota. Opened in 1965, this half-mile clay oval track has a storied history and is known for races that will put fans on the edge of their seats.
Viking Speedway welcomes a range of late models, modifieds, and sprint cars battling it out on the dirt oval. The track is open from late May through Labor Day, so fans have a chance to catch Viking Speedway’s MVPs all summer long. They might even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of next year’s Viking Speedway Hall of Fame inductee speeding across the finish line.
04

KRA Speedway, Wilmar

KRA Speedway at the Kandiyohi County Fairgrounds is a Minnesota auto racing gem. The 3/8-mile semi-banked dirt track has been a source of entertainment in and around Wilmar since 1951. KRA Speedway races feature classes such as modifieds, super stocks, and street stocks. The track's layout demands precision and skill, making for exciting and unpredictable races. Fans can even visit the pits after the dust has settled and congratulate their favorite driver on a great race.
05

Deer Creek Speedway, Spring Valley

Nestled in Spring Valley, Deer Creek Speedway is a premier dirt-clay track destination in Minnesota. This 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval track has earned a reputation for its top-notch facilities and fiercely competitive races. The speedway opened in 2002 and quickly became a favorite among drivers and fans alike. The track's picturesque setting and modern amenities make it a standout venue in the Midwest racing scene.
Deer Creek Speedway is open year-round. The venue hosts a variety of events, including the prestigious USMTS (United States Modified Touring Series) and the World of Outlaws Late Model Series. The racing season runs from April to October, so when the engines stop revving, visit Deer Creek Speedway for events like banquets, car shows, and trade shows.

Celebrating Minnesota’s racing legacy

Minnesota’s racing scene is a tradition imbued with adrenaline and community spirit. BIR stands as a historic landmark, Elko Speedway delivers close-quarters excitement, and Viking Speedway celebrates the roots of dirt track racing. KRA Speedway offers a cherished local experience while Deer Creek Speedway blends modern updates with classic dirt racing thrills.
Each track not only showcases gripping high-speed action but also reflects the unique character and passion of its local fans. It's not just about the speed, but the shared exhilaration and memories forged with every lap.
