Maybe you’ve been at it for a little while now and want to boost your cardio or maybe you are strategically planning your runs for the best bang for buck. Well, we are here to help!
If you’re looking to really take your runs to the next level, then here are a few routes around Sydney that can give you a boost (and a solid burn in your legs, too!).
The views aren’t too shabby either.
01

South Coogee Death Stairs

Where: Alexandria Parade, South Coogee
Distance: 250m
Elevation: 52m
The Coogee Death Stairs, also known as the Coogee Stairs of Doom, is a notorious and somewhat tongue-in-cheek nickname for the challenging staircase located in Coogee, a coastal suburb in Sydney, Australia. The staircase has gained a reputation for its steep ascent and has become a popular spot for fitness enthusiasts and locals seeking a rigorous workout.
The Coogee Death Stairs consist of a series of concrete steps that connect Coogee Beach to the coastal cliff walk, offering stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. While the exact number of steps varies depending on the source, it is commonly believed to be around 200 steps, each one demanding effort and determination to conquer.
Due to the steepness and relentless nature of the ascent, the stairs have earned their morbid nickname. However, it's worth noting that the name is more of a playful exaggeration than an accurate representation of any real danger associated with the stairs. Nevertheless, tackling the Coogee Death Stairs can be a grueling physical challenge, especially for those unaccustomed to intense exercise.
Despite the difficulty, the stairs have become a popular destination for fitness enthusiasts, including runners, walkers, and outdoor fitness groups. Many people incorporate the stairs into their workout routines, using them as a means to improve cardiovascular endurance and leg strength.
Visitors to Coogee often find themselves drawn to the stairs, not only for the workout but also for the rewarding panoramic views they offer at the top. From the cliff walk, one can admire the sweeping coastline, witness dramatic waves crashing against the cliffs, and take in the natural beauty of the surrounding area.
Overall, the Coogee Death Stairs have become a local landmark, known for their challenging nature, scenic location, and the sense of achievement that comes with conquering them.

The Balmoral Burn, Balmoral

Where: Awaba Street, Mosman
Distance: 550m

If an incredibly steep coastal up hill run is your thing then this one is for you!
The name says it all, doesn’t it? Awaba Street, is famously the route of The Balmoral Burn and is the perfect route for Sydney siders looking to work their legs while drinking in the spectacular views of Sydney Harbour.
The run itself is an annual charity fun run and raises funds for a good cause. It's organised by the long-standing Balmoral Beach Club and has become a highly anticipated annual event within the local community and runners from all over Sydney.

These can include live music, food stalls, children's activities, and a lively community fair. The event attracts a diverse range of attendees, from serious runners aiming for a fast time to families looking for a fun day out in support of a good cause.
The Balmoral Burn has become a beloved tradition in the Balmoral community, fostering a strong sense of community pride, unity, and philanthropy.
