SAFETY
Brakes
Fully functioning brakes and steering are required. Brakes must function independently of the steering and operate on a minimum of two wheels on the same axle.
Driver Safety
Drivers and co-drivers are required to wear a gum shield and helmet when taking on the course. It’s essential that both persons can easily escape their cockpit should you need to make a quick getaway!
BUILD
Creativity
What we’re looking for is the outrageous, the preposterous and the ostentatious! A soapbox should be an extension of its team. It’s wild. It’s crazy. It can be anything you want, it just can’t be ordinary. Make sure your idea doesn’t rely on pyrotechnics and smoke canisters as these are not allowed.
Measurements & Weight
Your human powered racing machine must be less than 2m wide, 2.5m wide, 2.5m tall and 3.5m long. It also needs to have at least a 10 cm clearance from the ground, and not exceed 80 kg (excluding the driver & co-driver of course!).
External Energy
Soapboxes must be powered by the strength of a push and the gravity of the hill only. No stored power or external energy sources (engines, batteries, catapults etc.) are allowed. But that doesn’t mean you won’t go fast!
TEAM
Main Rule
This event is, first and foremost, a race. Therefore, the fastest one across the finish line is going to be looked upon favourably. Take note though, that one actually has to cross the finish line in the vehicle to qualify, so driver’s sit tight and go all the way!
Judging Criteria
Teams are judged on three different criteria; creativity, showmanship and speed. You will need to dazzle, be outrageous, and as quick as a flash if you want that top place on the podium!
Crew
Teams must consist of four people including the driver, and you’ll need all of them to get a good push at the start line. All four team members must be 18 yrs or older. No more than two people can be in the Soapbox for the race; the driver and co-driver are on their own after the push off at the start line!
