Gaming
Dota 2 allows coders to meddle with the game mechanics to create unique modifications and make new games entirely. These games are displayed in the arcade section of the Dota 2 client and can be played by anyone. The game mods are often met with appreciation from the Dota 2 community which is always looking for variations to the game.
Here are some custom game mods for Dota 2 that are worth trying.
Pudge Wars
This is a mod that has been around since the WarCraft 3 days. The base game remains mostly the same. The objective of the game is to hook the opponent’s Pudge, with one hook being one kill. Some mods give the Pudge a Meepo net and Puck’s Phase Shift for added complexity. Other mods cover the opponent's side of the river in fog of war.
Pudge Wars tests your micro skills since there is no time to plan. You must always be killing or getting killed. What makes Pudge Wars exciting is the feast of kills; either through sheer luck or through pure skill. The mechanics of Pudge Wars seem simple, but that’s what makes for fun matchups.
Epic Boss Fight
The objective of Epic Boss Fight is simple: play as a team and defeat as many bosses you can. Although it sounds simple, it takes time to master the game because of the large number of skills, talents and items added to the mod. Many skills for heroes and spells for bosses are exclusive to the game and never seen anywhere else.
In order to win, you need to have a good understanding of the game’s nuances. Team synergy is also very important. Epic Boss Fight is now called Boss Hunters and is a towering figure in the mod community.
Troll and Elves 2
Troll and Elves puts together the best of several other mods for one great gaming experience. A player starts as the Troll with four abilities and access to shop. They try to hunt down Elves that make their encampments all around the map. Elves have the ability to construct buildings and towers as a line of defence between themselves and the Trolls.
Troll and Elves can last for an hour of exhilarating action. Elves die in one hit from the Troll but can make their bases on high grounds. The game demands tactic and patience from the Elves, and aggression and calculation from the Troll. This game mod is great for those who want to test their impulses or want a nostalgia trip from the original WarCraft 3.
Overthrow
Overthrow was created by Valve for the community and is one of the most played arcade games. The objective to win the game is to be the first to a certain number of enemy kills or to be the team with the most kills at the end of a pre-decided game time. This game mod has many maps to choose from.
What makes Overthrow exciting is the variety of matchups and its fast-paced gameplay. You need to be extremely quick to pick the most coins that drop from the Midas Throne in order to gain an advantage in the game.
R1v1r Runes
R1v1r Runes is Red Bull’s gift to the community and the latest addition to the long list of arcade games around Dota 2. The game features a basic 1v1 matchup in the mid lane with added features that can make or break your game. You start at level 6 with a Blink Dagger, Bottle and Ward. There are many mechanics involved in the game which makes it exciting.
In the 15th minute, a Divine Rapier drops three units away from your tower which can decide the game in your favour or against you immediately. For example, you could make a split-second decision to use your Blink Dagger and jump across the river to fetch your opponent’s Divine Rapier thereby letting you destroy their tower. R1v1r Runes is a unique take on the classic 1v1 matchup but reinvigorates it into an exciting new game.
