Pro Apex Legends player iiTzTimmy has weighed in on the best character debate, hoping to put an end to the argument once and for all.
Since players first landed in King’s Canyon in 2019, the question of who the best character is has sparked ongoing debate within the Apex Legends community. As the game has evolved, with numerous balance updates and the roster expanding from eight to 26 legends, so too have opinions.
Now, professional Apex player and popular Twitch streamer Timothy ‘iiTzTimmy’ An is stepping in to settle the debate with his definitive ranked play tier list from best to worst. If you’re a newbie looking for where to start, or an experienced player looking at where to spend your Legend Tokens, read on for this seasoned pro’s top tips.
01
PATH Tier
Pathfinder
iiTzTimmy judges the sarcastic robot as the best character in Apex Legends. He’s so sure of it that he’s given Pathfinder his own rank above S Tier, naming him the “GOATed” character. Pathfinder’s top spot position is largely thanks to his ability to place down ziplines to escape sticky situations swiftly. This ability, combined with his notoriously elusive hitbox, makes him top-tier for survivability.
02
S Tier
Bangalore
If you’re looking for a counter to controller players who benefit from generous aim assist, iiTzTimmy reckons that Bangalore is the one, going as far as to describe her power as ‘shameless’. Her smoke launcher allows her to disappear in a cloud of smoke, while her ult, Rolling Thunder, can wreck entire teams with its area of effect.
Revenant
Revenant is so good, he “needs to be deleted”. That’s according to iiTzTimmy, at least. His high skill ceiling is the only thing that holds him back from the top spot. His offensive abilities are formidable, but he also has a big hitbox, so if you don’t know how to play him, you won’t last long in the arena.
Lifeline
Lifeline has been essential to most team compositions since day one, due to her unmatched healing abilities. Her ability to revive two team-mates at once can give your team a second chance, and her ultimate, Care Package, is fantastic for gearing up your team in the early game.
Wattson
Wattson excels with gen healing, allowing you stay alive in hectic fights. Her Perimeter Security ability is great for trapping enemies, but can be tricky to utilise effectively.
Crypto
Crypto’s invisibility skill makes him a strong and dependable pick. There’s just one downside: “This character is so boring, I’m falling asleep!” His passive playstyle makes him an unpopular pick, so he’s not utilised as often as other top-tier characters.
03
A Tier
Newcastle
This sturdy character is one of the best defensive picks on the roster. His passive allows him to brush off bullets without being slowed, and his ult can save your team from just about any attack levied against you.
Fuse
Fuse is a powerhouse offensive character, able to dole out heavy damage with his explosive-based abilities. As iiTzTimmy explains, he fills a similar role to Mad Maggie, but is able to deal more damage with both his standard abilities and his devastating ult.
Mad Maggie
If you like to get up-close and personal with your foes, Maggie is a solid pick. Her passive ability allows her to move faster with shotguns and highlights enemies you’ve damaged through walls, which allows you to close in for the kill in frantic fights.
Horizon
Horizon’s utility has been the target of several nerfs since joining the roster, but she remains a great pick thanks to her fun movement abilities and satisfying ult.
Conduit
This electrifying legend is a great pick for almost any team and is especially effective when paired with Revenant.
Vantage
If you’re a dedicated sniper, Vantage remains the only choice for you. She’s incredibly strong in the early game and can help teams gain ground faster due to her beacon scan ability.
Seer
Seer is another high-skill character who can be extremely useful in the right hands. His biggest strength lies in his ability to silence enemies, temporarily stopping their use of abilities and cancelling those already in progress. When timed correctly, this can turn the tide of battles.
Bloodhound
iiTzTimmy judges Bloodhound to be one of the best starter characters due to their ability to scan the environment and track down enemies. In team play, their ability to do quick reckon can also help you avoid danger.
Loba
Loba is an all-around reliable pick, able to teleport to avoid danger and mark high-tier loot from a distance. While she doesn’t have any devastating offensive talents, she can be vital for tooling up your team.
04
B Tier
Gibraltr
Apex’s original tank is still a solid pick in today’s meta, as his bubble shield can mitigate serious damage and makes it easier to res allies. His ult can also decimate enemy teams.
Ballistic
Ballistic is an offensive character who has great combo potential. His ultimate is a fight winner, upgrading his sling weapon to legendary and granting himself and nearby allies faster reloads, movement speed and infinite ammo.
Catalyst
Calatlyst is a highly technical character who excels in laying traps for enemies. Unfortunately, her skillset is a little too finicky to be highly effective in most situations.
Valkyrie
While Valyrie’s movement abilities make her a great character for solo play, she’s not as useful as other skirmishers when playing in a team.
Ash
On paper, Ash seems like a very strong character, but most of her benefits can be better achieved by picking other characters. Her ability to detect fights from a distance isn’t that useful if your team has a recon character, and her teleport isn’t as effective as Wraith’s.
Caustic
Caustic is a good defensive character, but can’t measure up to the tanks who pack strong shields.
Rampart
Rampart is a cross between a tank and heavy offensive character, but isn’t highly effective in either category. Here’s hoping for some buffs in the near future.
Wraith
While iiTzTimmy recognises the strength of Wraith, he’s frustrated by what he calls “Wraith main syndrome”. “People who play [Wraith] are really good and make it look good,” he says, “but [she’s] just not a good character.” While strong on her own, Wraith doesn’t work well in a team.
Octane
iiTzTimmy’s take on Octane is spicy to say the least. “Everyone who plays this character is on something,” jokes the streamer, “whether it’s cheats, drugs… there’s something wrong with them.” However, he admits that players who take the time to become skilled at using this character can utilise his jump pads for some stunning results.
05
D Tier
Alter
Apex’s dimension-hopping trickster is another victim of iiTzTimmy’s ire. “She’s the new Mirage,” says the streamer. “She’s so bad!”
06
Bottom Tier
Mirage
iiTzTimmy doesn’t mince words when it comes to this support legend: “worst character in the game.” Mirage’s decoy abilities have always had questionable utility, but constant nerfs have made him one of the worst picks for competitive matches.
