Tristan, Jumong, battleritegamer64, xPecake and Cake. The new Red Bull Player One champion's sure got a lot of names. Perhaps the one he's most famous for though is Cake, which he used when he played professionally in NA. It was apparent that this wasn't his first rodeo, as was evident when you saw his calm, cool and collected plays. Jumong's experience on the competitive scene, together with his obvious talents, only saw him loose a single game in the entire competition - thus making him a very worthy winner.
Some say that the difference between a very good player and a great one is the ability to exploit any mistakes made from your opponent. A very good player can make proper preparations, manage his/her micro, pick and ban to their advantage, but only the great ones have the ability to immediately punish their foe, and make a calculated call to go for it, successfully and win. Jumong had the experience and cool to do just that. Without further ado - here's the winners interview:
What was your thoughts going into the tournament?
Tristan 'Jumong' Cote-Lalumiere: I just went to Brazil expecting to have fun, I knew in regular 5v5 League of legends I was easily the best player, but the 1v1 format is just way different especially because it is blind pick, so I went in without expecting any result.
I've been a challenger adc since season 4, I've always grinded solo queue pretty hard, reaching rank 1 NA in multiple seasons [6-7-8]
When you saw the other players, did you fear to play anyone in particular?
I didn't really scout anyone, coming into the tournament I only knew Ziviz because I saw that he won last year. In retrospect, Jinsh, Ziviz and Znd1 were probably the player with the best odds to win against me if we compare champion pools.
Was the tournament Red Bull Player One as you expected?
The event in itself was way better than I expected, I've been around the challenger scene and the amateur scene in NA a few seasons ago and everything was always unorganized and last minute, so I honestly didn't expect much out of this tournament, but I was pleasantly surprised. Other than the bo1 format at the start, I can't find anything negative about the event.
How does your League of Legends background look like?
I've been a challenger adc since season 4, I've always grinded solo queue pretty hard, reaching rank 1 NA in multiple seasons (6-7-8). In season 7 I started playing pro, went in Australia to play for a team, things didn't work out due to multiple issues so I went back to NA. I was picked up by Flyquest during the offseason, following Altec's departure. A few weeks later Wildturtle was signed so I was moved to substitute for the summer split. In season 8 I joined Echo Fox Academy for the last 3 weeks of the regular season. I quit the game at the end of season 8.
The winner of RBPO 2019 won a place in League of Legends All Stars – as the champion, what are your hopes for the competition?
I don't really have any expectations, I'm not going in with hopes of getting scouted or anything, I have no plans of playing pro again. It seems like its a "for fun" event, so I expect to have fun I guess. I'm pretty excited to see some friends from the area that I haven't seen since I quit the game.
Walk us through your Red Bull Player One experience.
Round 1 and 2 were pretty similar, I played Kosovo in a Varus/Lucian matchup and Spain in a Varus/Yasuo matchup, both games went fairly well. I had to play Serbia in round 3, I left heimerdinger up expecting to go in a heimerdinger mirror since all the other priority picks were banned, but I was lucky to end up in a Heimerdinger/Varus matchup which favors heimerdinger by a huge margin. The semi-final went pretty well except game 2 where I played like garbage, but got really lucky to end up winning it due to a mistake from my opponent. I ended up 3-0.
The first game of the final vs znd1 ended up being a Lucian vs Ryze matchup. I've played that matchup a lot in solo queue since I play a good amount of mid lane, I knew that I had an all-in window at lvl 6, and was able to capitalize on it. Round 2 was Tristana vs Cassiopeia, I misplayed a lot and during an all-in I greeded my summoners spell, but was able to comeback and get a cs win. Round 3 was a Varus mirror that I pretty much played perfectly, ended up killing him at lvl 6 with close to a 20 cs lead. In round 4 I did 2 major mistakes, the Lucian/Irelia matchup is Lucian favored but I wasted my exhaust for no reason and then I ran it down. Game 5 was a Lucian mirror in which i dominated early game but did a few errors afterwards, but still was able to secure the win at the end.
What are your overall thoughts about Red Bull Player One?
The experience was pretty nice, I got to meet a lot of cool people.
Big congratulations to Jumong - the Red Bull Player One 2019 champion!
