The snow packs have melted, flowers are blooming, birds are chirping and bees are buzzing — summer is just around the corner! Don't worry though, you still have time to get your body ready for all the pool and beach parties in the coming months.
To ensure your selfies capture the best version of yourself this summer, we caught up with multi-sport Olympian Lolo Jones at the Red Bull ReadySpin® event in Chicago and asked her about some of her fitness secrets.
RedBull.com: What's your most versatile workout?
Lolo Jones: Hill training. For track and field, it helps me get powerful out of the blocks but still work on the speed and I also use hill workouts for resistance in bobsledding.
How do you overcome injury setbacks?
Injuries are tough because you’re physically hurt and out of the game, it actually starts to take a toll on you mentally. So even when you are healed, you still have a mental blockage that you have to repair as well.
I do a lot of visualizations during the time that I’m injured so if I can’t hurdle, I’m visualizing that I can hurdle. I feel that it gives you just enough sharpness so that when you do return, you don’t have those re-injury fears as much.
What's your go-to workout song right now?
It’s the Rolly Rolly Rolex song by Ayo & Teo.
What's your secret to overcoming junk food?
I have a really big sweet tooth so what I’ve done is moved into healthier options. I love chocolate so I moved to dark chocolate with almonds because both of those have health benefits. I didn’t like the dark chocolate at first but as I’ve gotten used to it, now I love it. Just work on the little things.
Beyond physical exercise, what kind of mental exercises help you maintain your level of fitness?
Rest and relaxation. A lot of people tend to always be on and they forget to let the steam off for a bit. If I’m killing myself with workouts, and then take a day off, I can revive myself and take my workouts to another level.
Also, setting goals. It’s so cliché but you have to have goals or you drift. Your goals keep you accountable and they keep you in line. Find something that challenges you. Maybe you don’t want to run a 5k or a 10k but find something that you can aim for in two months.
